God Thinking XLVII - Unlearning 4

"Unlearning is not a new concept, even though it is not talked about much, unlearning has always been a part of the doctrine of Christ.

Think about it.  Jesus spent considerable time directing people to unlearn many of the things they considered to be truth or from God.  They had made so many rules of their own, they couldn’t even tell the difference from something from God and a man-made law that was totally of their own making.

Let’s look at some of the things that Jesus taught about unlearning.

Matthew 5:21-22
“Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shall not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgement.
V22 But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgement: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.”

Here’s another one.

Matthew 5:31-32
“It hath been said, whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
V32 But I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.”

Again in Matthew 5:38-45
“Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
V39 But I say unto you, that ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
V40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away
thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
V41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
V42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not away.
V43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thine enemy.
V44 But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
V45 That ye may be children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
V46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same?
V47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more that others?  Do not even the publicans so?
V48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”

Here’s some more.
Matthew 6:25
“Therefore I say unto you, take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on.  Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

Jesus took what had been taught for hundreds of years and changed it all.  Jesus told everyone He came into contact with; if you want to be right with God, your Father, you will need to change the way you think about things.

Even simple truths, but God truths unfettered by the hand of man, can and does change life.  Unlike erroneous thinking, God thinking builds a foundation of truths that alter everything about you.

Trust me when I say that the people that heard Jesus speak had to go through a period of time where unlearning was required."
